VENICE – The Venice Biennale has announced that a Ukrainian Day will be held on Sept. 8 at the 79th Venice International Film Festival.

The event will include initiatives to show solidarity with Ukraine and support its artists, with special focus on the condition of the film industry amid the difficult situation the country’s population is experiencing.

The appointments of Ukrainian Day will take place from 10 AM to 1 PM in meeting areas of the Venice Production Bridge at Hotel Excelsior, Lido di Venezia.

Taking part in the panel will be – among others – Ukrainian ambassador to Italy Yaroslav Melnyk; the head of the National Cinema Institution of Ukraine Marina Kuderchuk; and the director of the film “Luxembourg Luxembourg”, in competition in the Horizons section of the festival, Antonio Lukich.

There will also be the director of the film “Freedom on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom”, which is being screened at the festival but is not in competition, Evgeny Afineevsky, as well as the artist representing the Ukrainian pavilion at the Biennale, Pavlo Makov.

Among the issues dealt with in the panel, which will be flanked by videos, are cooperation between Ukraine and Italy; the difficult situation the Ukrainian film industry is suffering; co-productions; the role of authors and filmmakers; the variety of the Ukrainian audiovisual industry – including art films, commercial ones, television series, and streaming platforms; and the future of Ukrainian cinematography.
