From September 16 to 24, 2022, Florence will be at the centre of contemporary artistic production, with various works displayed across streets and city squares. The first edition of the Florence Art Week event is furthemore co-organised with MUS.E – Uffizi, Palazzo Strozzi, Istituto degli Innocenti and BIAF – Biennale Internazionale di Antiquariato.
The arts taking over the city come from diverse sources, ranging from Henry Moore, to Olafur Eliasson, to Tony Cragg, to Sammy Baloji. Other artistic works are those that make up the collection ‘Passione Novecento. Da Paul Klee a Damien Hirst’ showcasing the masters of the 20th century, and finally those constituting the ‘Bonelli Story: 80 anni di storie a fumetti’, displaying 80 years of comic book art tradition in Italy.
Finally, the event ‘Rinascimento +’ returns to the city, for the third time, as part of the festival, whereby a prestigious prize is given to eminent collectors for their general support for art and artists. This year’s prize will be made by artist Emiliano Maggi who has prepared a piece to be performed on the river Arno on September 23 curated by Caroline Corbetta.
The sites of the festival are among the most elegant in Florence: the Museo Novecento, Piazza della Signoria, the churchyard of the Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte, the Palazzo Vecchio, Palazzo Strozzi, Palazzo Medici Riccardi, the Uffizi galleries and the Museo dell’Istituto degli Innocenti, and more.
With this festival, as the city mayor, Dario Nardella commented, Florence demonstrates ‘its ability to let the ancient and the modern conversate, being at once the birthplace of the Italian renaissance and increasingly suited to innovation’.
29 cultural institutions involved, 43 events, 37 sites and 9 days – there is quite a bit to delve into and enjoy!
